    Layer, don't just buy one "big enough" coat, a good base layer plus mid layer plus shell handles way more temperature range than one heavy coat, and you're not sweating indoors on transit.

    Ice grips for your boots. Sounds minor until your first icy sidewalk. Cheap and saved me from at least two falls.
