What surprised you most about the actual cost of living once you landed?

Everyone quotes tuition and proof-of-funds numbers, but what's the everyday cost that actually surprised you after you arrived (groceries, phone plans, transit, whatever)?

Groceries were way higher than I budgeted for, and a lot of the "cheap" meal plan advice online assumes prices from a few years ago. Cooking in bulk on weekends saved me a lot.

Winter clothing is a real, one-time hit to your budget if you're coming from a warm climate, a proper winter coat plus boots was a bigger expense than I expected in month one.
