Ontario's auto insurance rules changed July 1 — am I still covered if I don't buy the "optional" benefits?

Renewing my car insurance and my broker mentioned a bunch of accident benefits are now optional add-ons. Am I still protected without them, or did my coverage just get thinner by default?

Your core protection isn't gone — medical, rehabilitation, and attendant care benefits stay mandatory on every policy under the July 1, 2026 reform (FSRA / Ontario Regulation 383/24). What became optional is everything else: income replacement, non-earner benefits, caregiver benefits, and a few others. So it's not automatically "thinner," but it does mean you need to actively decide what optional coverage to add rather than assume it's bundled in like before — ask your broker to walk through the new OPCF 47R endorsement line by line so you know exactly what you're opting into or out of. /guides/car-insurance-by-province has the full breakdown.
