Heard Quebec landlords legally can't ask for ANY deposit — is that actually true?

oinp_watcher
A friend told me Quebec doesn't allow security deposits or last month's rent deposits at all, which sounds very different from what I've heard about Ontario/BC. Is that real?

It's real — under the Civil Code of Quebec, a landlord is prohibited from requesting a deposit of any kind (no last month's rent, no separate damage deposit). If someone asks you for one when you're renting in Quebec, that's not a legal request, and it's worth knowing before you sign anything or hand over money you don't need to. This is the biggest single difference from how Ontario/BC/Alberta handle move-in costs — see /guides/renters-insurance-and-renting-basics for the full province comparison. General information from my own experience, not legal advice — for anything specific to your file, a licensed RCIC or immigration lawyer can look at your actual documents.
